Dualidad Antillana:
Cuba & Puerto Rico
Duality: The quality or condition of being dual; an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something; a dualism.
Cuba and Puerto Rico. These two Antilles were conquered by Spain in 1492 and 1493 by Christopher Columbus. They had similar histories and were participants of many of the same wars and struggles. Cubans and Puerto Ricans have similar roots: the Native Indian Tainos, Spaniards, Africans, and Europeans, with some Asian influences as well. They were both colonies of Spain for more than 400 years. Until the United States became involved, their evolution through a revolution of so many aspects, from political to agricultural, from social democracy to socialism…the future can only tell the continuous duality of these two countries.
Puerto Rico remains a colony of the United States while Cuba is an independent country governed by one political party and structure since 1959. Both are “democratic” but with their own idiosyncrasies.
Artists from both countries are influenced by their environment, their people, religions, political situation, spirituality, their roots, and cultural influences; materials are limited in Cuba (for many reasons) while in Puerto Rico are expensive due to the Acts that impact the economy and port taxes.
CUBA
“The problem today is to maintain socialist principles when we have to use not only socialist but capitalist means.”
CUBA & PR
“No es Facil – It is not Easy”applies to anything nowadays."
CUBA & PR
"We love U.S. culture, we play your sports, study your language, and know all of your Hollywood stars."
PR
"The problem today is to maintain our values as a country instead of kneeling to the US for aide, when they treat us as a third-class citizen. We are the oldest colony in the world."

I HAVE A WHITE ROSE TO TEND
I cultivate a white rose
In June as in January
For the sincere friend
who shakes my hand frankly.
And for the cruel person
Who would want to break my heart,
I cultivate, neither thistles nor thorns,
I cultivate a white rose.
Jose Marti
Cultivo una rosa blanca
en junio como enero
para el amigo sincero
que me da su mano franca.
Y para el cruel que me arranca el corazón con que vivo,
cardo ni ortiga cultivo;
cultivo la rosa blanca.

La Caridad del Cobre
The patron saint of Cuba, always wear a yellow dress. This Virgin appeared to fishermen, outside of Santiago De Cuba near the region of coper mines, during a severe thunderstorm. They were praying for their safety as they were encountering a severe thunderstorm. She appeared on the water and lead them to safety. Since then, She became the saint of Santiago and later of Cuba. She is veneered by all. Every visit by a Catholic Pope to Cuba, she is given a golden with silver crown; until now she has 5 crowns.
In the Yoruba religion, she represents Oshun and is given sunflowers. Oshun is commonly called the river orisha, or goddess, and is typically associated with water, purity, fertility, love, and sensuality. She is considered one of the most powerful of all orishas, and, like other gods, she possesses human attributes such as vanity, jealousy, and spite.
San Martin
Was a Dominican monk from Peru. He is the first African-descendant saint in Catholicism. He is known for his miracles among the poor, sick, and most vulnerable.
In the Afro-Cuban Yoruba religion he represents Eleggua, Ligua, Legua. Eleggua is known to open paths, and begin your induction into the religion. He is a warrior and cuts or takes away objects that obstruct your path.
San Blas
Saint Blaise, is the saint of the wild beast. He is the patron of the Armenian Order of Saint Blaise. In Italy he is known as San Biaggio. In Spanish-speaking countries, he is known as San Blas, and has lent his name to many places. Blaise was venerated as the patron saint of throat diseases. The ritual of the blessing of the throats began in the 16th century, when his cult was at its peak.
Although in the Yoruba religion his image doesn’t directly correlate to a name of an Orisha, his image is used to pray for healing, an orisha of healing in all aspects, a Babalu-Aye.
San Miguel
Was the leader of all angels. An arcángel that is depicted as an arcabucero, means that the angel battles with a firearm over his forearm, pointing his fire arm, or with the firearm inserted in a canon. The angel has a defiant attitude.
In the Afro-Cuban Yoruba religion he represents Oggun. Oggun was a warrior, a hero from the ‘wars’, he fights, he is a surgeon, policing, and he is violent towards his enemies.
