Promoting the Caribbean's Rich Cultural and Artistic Heritage
Spirit, Artistry & Craft of Moko Jumbies
Stilt dancing originated on the continent of Africa and was documented as early as the fifteen hundreds. The African stilt dancers evolved from a Spiritual context representing the powers of the creator, assuming the role of guardians of the villages fighting off all evil spirits. They also shouldered the role of a medium carrying messages from the diseased to the living and assisting the sociological process of the rites of passage. The stilt dancers survived the Middle Passage and thrived in the Caribbean albeit with visual and contextual changes.
TRUDI GILLIAM
MOKO JUMBIE MASK
Copper/Brass Sculpture
4" x 12" x 24"
Trudi is a prolific artist who works in copper, brass, sea glass, and acrylic paints. Her interests in sea life, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors is reflected in her work. Animals from both land and sea are represented with the artist's usual sense of whimsy. Trudi is an avid beach and river comber, so her work is often incorporated with her found objects like driftwood, sea glass, and stones. Using oxygen and acetylene gases, Trudi combines the copper, brass, and nickel silver to create her one-of-a-kind, distinctly colored works of sculpture. The colors are achieved by using various chemicals to create patinas, and by applying thin layers of acrylic paint.

My life-long interest in art has led to a recent pursuit of linoleum print making which inspired me to create this work of layered carved tissue paper and acrylic paint. The composition is derived from a photograph for which the author is unknown. Nevertheless, the scene is local, and I believe the Moko Jumbie featured lives on St Thomas. I enjoyed bringing this scene to life with vibrant colors. The tissue paper gives an interesting texture which is not fully portrayed in the image of the piece.

MOKO JUMBIE CULTURE BEARER
OIL on Canvas
34" x 36"
My inspiration for the moko jumbie pieces comes from our local culture and my fascination with their serious traditional, yet playful, role, a figure to be revered, loved, and respected. They have been an important part of our history for over 200 years. I want to highlight the moko Jumbies cultural importance with a sincere appreciation for what they do and who they are, to help make sure we do not lose this cultural icon.

When Mary Ellen retired from teaching math, she was looking for some new interests. During the 2013-14 season on St Croix she saw a sign in a window that advertised art classes with Jane Akin. Judy Rossman took her through a progression from drawing basic geometric shapes to drawing glass, metal, and fabric. She was amazed at the progress she made in just six weeks. For the next two years she did watercolor paintings with Jane in the winter and each

My hope was to infuse the piece with the rich cultural history of Caribbean tradition and African ancestry…. ENJOY

MASKED JUMBIE
Acrylic on Canvas
13" x 49"
My artwork is reflective of fourteen years of working, playing, gardening, raising children and generally living on wonderful St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. You can see my work throughout the island in large original murals in homes and public places. I studied Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and finished at UNC- Wilmington with a Bachelor in Fine art and a minor in my second love, Marine Biology. From college on I have rarely lived without an aquarium in my home. My husband and I are avid scuba divers. Moving to an island from North Carolina was very natural for me. I was born to be surrounded by water. For many years I have focused my work on mural projects. In the last ten years my work has become more canvas oriented. All work is original and most of the subject matter reflects life here on St. Croix.
